Yes, I do mean to delete the entire source tree.  You are also absolutely
true about the inefficient use of bandwidth.  However, I don't see how this
pertains to the problem.  Also, one of the first things I usually see on
these mailing lists is instructions to do just that when a build fails.
I've also gotten into this habit from previous jobs where an extraneous
file/directory caused problems.
