Odd bootloader issue

Was reinstalling a machine, And i've come across something weird.
After finishing the install and rebooting, this is all I see...

F1 BSD

If I specify the path to boot, I get the swirley pipe, and a white
block, and then nothing. no text, no keyboard, just... dead.   I'm
seeing this on a Gigabyte AMD 760MPX chipset with a Maxtor 160Gb hd. 
Cd source was from June 27th.  I also went back and tried setting the
boot code to "packet" with boot0cfg and get the same response.  
Anyone have any ideas or have seen this?
