:Good suggestion but, I already tried that with no success. The file is 
:there, when I run dev_mkdb, the timestamp is updated but DF still 
:complains about it's supposed non-existence at boot time. I tried 
:re-running mergemaster with no success. I even tried changing the tag 
:back to FreeBSD, then rerunning mergemaster.

    Check the permissions of the directories leading up to /var/run/dev.db.
    ls -lda / /var /var/run /var/run/dev.db.
