The Gentoo Linux livecd has a "memtest" boot option, which boots into 
memtest86.  I can't begin to count how much grief this has saved me... 
now, if only I could persuade our IT group to quit buying the 
bottom-of-the-line machines and memory.

Perhaps something to consider for DF's CD?
