Multiple sounds

You were correct.
Is there any way to get this done automatically? Without manually 
changing all multimedia programs that make sound?

That's usually been the answer...  The two applications are probably
trying to play on the same channel, and not moving to an unoccupied one.
If possible, try telling one program to use /dev/dsp0.1.  Those steps in
the handbook give you dev/dsp0.0-4, so I'm assuming they're contending for
/dev/dsp0.0.
