how do people play with different versions of DBSD on the same system?

Support for installing to and booting off an extended partition is
pretty much "out of the box."  NetBSD seems to have added it in 2.x.

I haven't researched NetBSD's CVS logs, but its boot infrastructure
seems different enough from DragonFly's to make me suspect not.
