Basic rule of open-source marketing, you don't need it when the product 
speaks for itself, when inserting energy you can choose (within a 
overlapping degree) between marketing or improving the product.

My suggestion for open-source projects is not to spend too much energy 
in marketing but in improving the product.
If it's a feasible product other institutes/companies will do the marketing.

Most open-source/spare-time developers have very own private reasons why 
they do what they are doing, customer-responsibility mostly not a part 
of it. Being BSD licensed this is a perfect opportunity for a commercial 
company to provide that (as it seems this is already the case).
