You can already use extended partitions for anything except the
root partition.  For example, I have:

/dev/ad0s11 on /opt (ufs, NFS exported, local, soft-updates)

and I put the src and ports directories on /opt with the
appropriate symlinks from /usr.

Is that what you mean?
