By the way don't neglect the fact that your FreeBSD-5.3 machine may be
misconfigured or have particular hardware (acpi?) problems. Frankly
my machine under FreeBSD-5.3 is very responsive, subjectively i cannot say
it is slower than under FreeBSD-4 (of course FreeBSD-4 may be faster on
some benchmarks), nor slower than a similar Linux machine.
