There's also a small issue with cache_timeout: if you have local 
cache_timeout of 30s and configure it to contact another instance of 
lookupd that also caches it for 30s, could the data get 1 minute stale?

Perhaps worse for double-caching.

 Might there not be a a 'worst case' situation wherein it was
*always* 29 seconds + local cache-age stale? i.e max 59 seconds, not 30
or on-average 15 seconds + local-cache-age stale, i.e. on average
30 seconds stale, not 15...
Though neither situation is new or lacking in workarounds...
