some things they offer over vinum is: easiness of setup, no disklabel
stuff, if a drive fails just go into the setup and rebuild it. its easy
(TM).

As long as theres no quick way to RAID-1 all partitions including /
whats the point?

If we had ZFS port done then there would really be no point in using
onboard RAID, I agree.

Does this mean now that onboard RAID controllers that come with today
nearly all motherboards will be finally supported? If so, thats awesome.

The "onboard" RAID controllers are more or less a marketing gag. Almost
all the functionality still has to be implemented in the drivers, they
don't offer the performance of real RAID controllers nor the ability to
use e.g. battery buffered write caches. In short, they don't offer over
ccd or vinum.
