Problem booting 1.0 CD on laptop

I downloaded the 1.0 Release CD and tried to boot it on my Sony Vaio
Z600-TEK.

The CD drive is attached to the PC-Card slot by an ATA card, and when
it comes to probe it I get (copied by hand):

ata4: <TEAC IDE Card/II> at port 0x180-0x187,0x386-0x387 iomem 0x88002000-0x88002fff irq 9 function 0 config 33 on pccard0
device_probe_and_attach: ata4 attach returned 12

It then fails to mount root.

This happens regardless of whether ACPI is enabled.

I installed some FreeBSD 4.x releases without trouble, and was able to
install 5.x if I disabled ACPI.

Any suggestions?
