I think this needs more tailoring. For instance, fetching and maintaining pkgsrc might actually be easier via cvsup. Also, KERNCONFDIR should be mentioned, as well as the rolling-replace thing for packages due to 1:1 threading.
Well we should decide what goes in UPDATING and what in build(7) (which 
describes KERNCONFDIR e.g.). Currently, we have building/upgrading 
instructions (of various detail) in:

/usr/src/Makefile
/usr/src/README
/usr/src/UPDATING
build(7)
