I have a script that sets DESTKERNNAME, it fails after this change.
(script installs multiple vkernel kernels)

I would suggest to not include `boot/' in DESTKERNNAME,
but to prefix DESTKERNNAME with `boot/' in kern.post.mk
(just like `module' is handled);
any objection to change this?
