    Well, the mechanic works fine for many other things, such as
    make.conf, rc.conf, periodic.conf.   The point is for the system
    to provide a reasonable default and then let the user override
    it without having to edit the system-generated file.  This allows
    the system to unconditionally update system generated files and
    greatly reduces the user's work.

    I haven't run mergemaster in something like 4 years.  I haven't needed
    to.
