Hi.

Seems that varsym program does not properly return an exit code.
For example, this code won't work:

# varsym test=OK
# varsym test
test=OK
# varsym TEST
TEST: No such file or directory
# echo $?
0 # Should be 1
# varsym -q TEST || echo Hurrah!
#
