I've tried both and I get the same result:

/bin/sh /usr/local/bin/libtool15 --mode=link cc -O -pipe -march=athlon-xp
-L/usr/local/lib -o gnome-open gnome-open.o libgnome-2.la -lpopt
cc -O -pipe -march=athlon-xp -o .libs/gnome-open gnome-open.o -L/usr/local/lib
. /.libs/libgnome-2.so -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgobject-2.0 -lgnomevfs-2 -lbonobo-2
-lbonobo-activation -lgconf-2 -lORBit-2 -lgmodule-2.0 -lgthread-2.0 -lglib-2.0
-liconv /usr/local/lib/libesd.so -lgnugetopt -laudiofile -lm -lpopt -Wl,--rpath
-Wl,/usr/X11R6/lib -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/local/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so: undefined reference to `pthread_create'

The problem seems to be a missing -pthread flag. I thought I might install
both the new and old libtools side-by-side and see what differences I can
find.
