For the record, using the same pre-existing partition (which was originally
partitioned from within Windows XP and not formatted or assigned a drive
letter) I can also install FreeBSD 4.10 and boot to it. The loader is the
0.8 version which is really FreeBSD's 4.10.

So both 4.10 and 5.2 boot completely to a partition created in Windows XP.
I will redo the partition using fdisk from the DF snapshot to see if it is
being very picky about that.
