Whoops, perhaps I spoke too soon.  It was working fine.  Then I tried
compiling it with -DDEBUG.  Produced lots of output, looked OK, then I
tried interrupting the server with ^C.  The machine locked up, rebooted
30 seconds or so later, and I got this crash dump:
